Should You Add a QR Code to Your Resume?

Jan 27, 2021. By Admin

A QR code can make it easy for a recruiter to open a portfolio, LinkedIn profile or work sample. It is not a substitute for a clear resume, and it should never carry information that is essential to understanding your experience.

When a QR code can help

It is most useful when your work has an online component that a hiring manager may reasonably want to review: a design portfolio, a project case study, a professional profile, a presentation or a carefully selected body of work. Keep the destination relevant to the role you are applying for and make sure it opens quickly on a phone.

What the code should link to

  • A current LinkedIn profile with role-relevant details.
  • A portfolio page, GitHub profile or selected project work.
  • A professional website that supports the claims in the resume.

What to avoid

Do not use a QR code to hide your contact details, full work history or qualifications. Applicant tracking systems and recruiters should be able to understand the resume without scanning anything. Avoid codes that lead to a generic home page, outdated files, social feeds or pages requiring a login.

Placement and testing

If you use one, keep it small and place it near your contact information or portfolio link. Include the written URL as well. Test it on more than one phone, confirm that the landing page is public, and check that it does not make the document visually crowded. For most standard applications, a clean text link is sufficient.

The best resume choice depends on your target role and application channel. A clear, factual document will always carry more weight than a decorative element.
