A rejection rarely means that your career has no value. More often, the document does not make the right evidence easy to find for the role being considered. Start by comparing the resume with the job description before assuming you need a complete redesign.

1. The resume is not focused on the target role

One generic document cannot speak equally well to every job. Match your opening summary, key skills and most relevant accomplishments to the position. Use the employer's language where it accurately reflects your work, but do not insert keywords you cannot support.

2. Responsibilities appear without outcomes

Hiring teams need to understand scope and impact. Replace broad duty statements with evidence: scale, revenue influenced, time saved, quality improved, team size, customer outcomes or process results. A number only helps if you can explain what it represents.

3. Important information is difficult to scan

Dense paragraphs, inconsistent dates and unclear headings slow a reader down. Use a simple hierarchy, consistent job-title formatting and concise bullets. Put the strongest, role-relevant work near the top of each role.

4. The format does not fit the application route

Applications through job portals and employer systems usually benefit from a clean, text-led format. Presentation-led roles may allow more visual structure, provided the document remains readable. Choose the format for the audience, not just for appearance.

Before sending an application, check factual accuracy, contact details, dates and links. Then ask whether a recruiter could identify your fit in the first half minute of reading.
